Pepper Sprays for Self-Defense

Handheld Pepper Spray is one of the simplest and most effective self-defense tools. One press of a button is enough to release an irritating substance that incapacitates the attacker, giving us time to escape or call for help.

Defensive Sprays come in many different variants, differing in the form of the substance, the method of spraying, and size: small containers can be easily carried with us at all times, while large-capacity pepper sprays can handle even a group of attackers.

Is Pepper Spray Legal?

Most importantly, pepper sprays are completely legal in Poland. Their possession, carrying, and use in self-defense is fully legal, as they are weapons that do not require a permit.

Unlike a telescopic baton or a stun gun, pepper spray does not cause permanent bodily harm and does not pose a significant risk to health or life, so we do not have to worry about exceeding the limits of necessary defense.

How Do Pepper Sprays Work? - Capsaicin and More

Pepper sprays are substances belonging to the group of lachrymators (tear gases), in which the active ingredient is capsaicin. This substance is obtained from hot chili peppers and is responsible for their spicy taste.

In small concentrations, capsaicin enhances the flavor of dishes, while in larger amounts it causes a burning sensation and spiciness by stimulating pain receptors. Importantly, despite the intense burning and heat sensation caused by capsaicin on the skin and mucous membranes, it does not cause permanent tissue damage.

What to Consider When Choosing Pepper Spray?

The first thing to consider when choosing pepper spray is its strength: to ensure effective defense in a threatening situation, the spray should act quickly and be able to stop even an aggressor under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or adrenaline.

The strength of the spray is described by three parameters: OC, MC, and SHU. Understanding them allows you to quickly assess whether a particular spray will meet your needs:

OC stands for Oleoresin Capsicum, which is an oleoresin containing capsaicin. Its amount is indicated as a percentage of the total mixture. The amount of OC determines how long and intensely the person affected by the spray will feel its effects.

MC stands for Major Capsaicinoids, which are the main capsaicinoids responsible for the potency of the substance and, in practice, the effectiveness of the pepper spray. They are given as a percentage of the OC content: thus, a spray containing 10% OC and 20% MC contains 2% MC in the overall mixture - this is the highest legally permissible value.

The more MC in the mixture, the better: the irritant will work faster and more effectively, even in adverse weather conditions like rain or strong wind. However, it is not worth participating in an "arms race" and striving for the maximum amount of MC at any cost - defensive sprays with 2% MC content are intended for defense against aggressive animals, specifically bears. For humans, solutions with 0.5 - 1.5% MC content are used, and this amount is completely sufficient.

The last parameter describing the effectiveness of the spray is SHU, or Scoville Heat Units. It is used to determine the spiciness of dishes by referring to the amount of capsaicin contained in them. In the case of pepper sprays, the SHU amount informs us how quickly and intensely the aggressor will feel the effects of the mixture. Most popular sprays have between 1 and 3 million SHU, and for comparison, pure capsaicin has 16 million SHU.

Defensive Sprays - Types and Uses

The effectiveness of pepper spray depends not only on the strength of the mixture used but also on the way it is sprayed. Different variants of sprays are available, adapted to different situations:

Pepper Sprays in Cloud Form are the classic and still most popular form of defensive spray. The spray is released as a cone-shaped cloud covering a large area. It does not require precise aiming, but this type of spray has a shorter range and is very susceptible to wind - a strong gust can even reverse or disperse the cloud.

Pepper Sprays in Stream Form release a concentrated stream of spray. The disadvantage of this solution is the need to aim at the attacker's face, but the advantage is a greater range than the cloud and resistance to weather conditions.

Pepper Sprays in Gel Form are an advanced form of the above solution, releasing a stream of gel containing capsaicin. The gel effectively adheres to the attacker's face and offers a greater range than a regular stream. It can also be safely used indoors due to its limited impact on the surroundings. The disadvantage is the need for precise aiming at the attacker's face: the stream is narrow and requires covering the respiratory area to be effective.

Pepper Sprays in Foam Form are a special defensive spray designed for use in confined spaces. They have a relatively short range but tightly cover the attacker's face, preventing harm to bystanders or the defender.

As in most life situations, the choice of tool depends on the task for which we intend to use it. If we anticipate confrontation with an attacker outdoors, choose a gel. If we are concerned about our safety in a stairwell or on a train, foam pepper sprays are the solution. The appropriate choice of spray ensures a sense of security and enables effective self-defense.

Pepper Spray for Security Guards - How Does It Differ from Ordinary?

Pepper spray used by police and other uniformed services does not differ from that available on the civilian market. Due to the nature of their service and tasks, they typically prefer sprays with large capacities.

So-called "extinguishers" have a large capacity and therefore greater pressure, allowing them to affect the attacker at a slightly longer distance. For convenient handling of a large container, they usually have a pistol grip or another special handle to facilitate aiming and spraying.

The large mass and size are not a problem for uniformed officers, but for ordinary users, it may be a discriminating obstacle: it prevents the discreet carrying of the spray in a jacket pocket or purse. However, it can be easily carried in a pouch or on a tactical vest, along with police handcuffs, a telescopic baton, or a service weapon holster.

How to Effectively Defend Yourself with Pepper Spray?

Pepper spray can ensure your safety, but only if you follow a few important points:

First, always have it on hand. Even the best spray is worthless if you cannot use it when needed. Think and plan where you will carry your defensive spray - in a jacket pocket, purse - so that you can always quickly draw and use it. A spray hidden at the bottom of a tactical backpack and crushed by other items is useless! If you wear a tactical belt, consider getting an appropriate pepper spray holder.

Second, practice. Train quick drawing and handling of the spray so that in a threatening situation, you are prepared and don't wonder "which way does it spray." Moreover, the necessity of defense induces stress, which proper preparation will help you overcome. A pouch or holster for the spray on the belt will help you master instinctive drawing.

Third, regularly check its functionality. Every few months, perform a short spray in safe conditions to check if the spray is functional and ready for use. Also, check the expiration date on the container, and without hesitation, replace the pepper spray with a new one if it is nearing the end. You can safely dispose of the old spray in the trash.

Fourth, aim at the face. Pepper sprays, to incapacitate the attacker, must reach their eyes, nose, or mouth. A splash on the neck, forehead, or chest may be effective but does not guarantee your safety. This is especially important for concentrated spray, gel, and foam streams.

Fifth, run away! Remember, pepper spray is only meant to stop the aggressor for a few moments and allow you to distance yourself to a safe distance. Once you use it, run immediately! Only when you are in a safe place should you call for help.
